The 'Dons earned their fifth straight win after erasing a 14-point Cleveland State second half advantage. A 15-2 stretch gave the 'Dons their first lead of the second half at 57-54 with 7:41 remaining when Jalon Pipkins made a 3-pointer. The squads would exchange leads until Chong Qui's heroics forced overtime.
Cleveland State had a chance to win it with one second left in overtime but Tre Gomillion missed a pair of free throws. A double overtime win seemed destined for the 'Dons after going up 89-86, but then CSU's Deshon Parker made a 3-pointer with three seconds left to force a third overtime.
The 'Dons were up three in the final extra session when Chris Greene knotted the game at 95 on a 3-pointer with 1:03 left. No worries though, Jarred Godfrey converted a layup on the other end with 33 seconds remaining to put the 'Dons up for good. Bobby Planutis, who hasn't missed a free throw all season, sealed the game with a pair of freebies with one second left.
Pipkins finished with a career-high 27 points. Godfrey totaled 20 points. Deonte Billups totaled 15 on four 3-pointers. Planutis added 13 and Chong Qui added 11 points and six assists.
Pipkins finished with 51 minutes. Godfrey and Chong Qui each had 48. Pipkins is only the 12th player in NCAA Division I to play 51 or more minutes in a game this year.
The 'Dons forced Cleveland State into 24 turnovers thanks to 15 Mastodon steals. The last time the 'Dons recorded 15 steals against a Division I program was Jan. 10, 2019 against Oral Roberts.
The Vikings had seven players score in double-digits.
Monday was also Senior Night for the 'Dons as Pipkins and Cameron Benford were honored prior to the game.
The Mastodons improve to 16-10 (11-6 Horizon). Cleveland State falls to 17-7 (13-4 Horizon).
The 'Dons hit the road this weekend to play at Green Bay and at Milwaukee.
